NRP Products are a cellular activation additive is a product that has been developed based on the fundamental metabolic biology of microorganisms in wastewater systems.
The existing approaches to improving the overall functioning of the wastewater treatment systems has been to add microorganisms and /or chemicals to the WWTP or to employ masking agents and /or strong chemicals to the collection system in order to correct both biological and engineering design problems.
NRP Inc. scientists studied the major problems of concern to both the WWTP operators and the collection system operators and identified what they believe to be the most pressing and important problems in the waste water treatment field today, namely, fats, oils and grease (FOG) , hydrogen sulfide odor (H2S, sulfuric acid production) and sludge disposal (bio-solids ). All of these problems are in one way or another fundamentally a result of the biological processes of waste water digestion and decomposition.
Each of these identified problem areas in Wastewater represent both a substantial monetary drain on the resources allocated to operate any system and on a potential health and environmental crises in the event of a problem in the biological activity of the system. In short, a Wastewater system is a living , integrated, and multi-functioning biological entity made up of many complex interrelationships all functioning as a single “living” body.
The “heart” of this wastewater treatment body is the various indigenous microorganisms that are responsible for the digestion of the organic matter that is carried by the system. These microorganisms enter the system primarily via the human waste route, but, a significant population of microorganisms also enters the wastewater system from the natural environment, food and beverage establishments (manufacturing or service) and the traditional and non-traditional agricultural endeavors.
All these microorganisms become resident in the wastewater system and eventually find a specific environmental niche in which to function at their optimal metabolic level. This optimal metabolic level is determined by several factors the following being the most important: a. level of oxygen b. pH of water c. surface area available for support d. organic composition of wastewater e. availability of micro-nutrients and intracellular enzymes f. presence of toxic products.
The reality of the wastewater environment has shown that of the above factors the only one that can be significantly and cost effectively modified is the (e) availability of micro-nutrients and intracellular enzymes.
NRP,Inc. having identified this problem as one of requiring total biological treatment in order to facilitate reducing odor, fats, grease, oil and the lowering of total sludge volume through enhancing the biological activity of the indigenous microorganisms. This resulted in the development of a product called NRP10-1000 (BioKat).
NRP products are a complex formulation that increases the cellular metabolism of the bacterial microorganisms present in the wastewater. It functions by supplying the missing or deficient intercellular micro enzymes that are lacking in the nutrient constituent of the wastewater.
The nutrients present in the wastewater are derived from the end product of the digestive process of the people using the wastewater system. These nutrients (wastes) have already gone through a biological digestive treatment in the human body whereby the body has extracted the nutrients that were subject to the human digestive tract and are deficient in many biochemical components. Many of these components are amino acids, proteins, vitamins and enzymes. Thus the wastewater stream can be considered to be deficient or lacking in many of the nutrients and micro nutrients that would be required by many beneficial microorganisms that we rely on to further process (digest) the waste nutrients.
The inefficiency of the beneficial microorganisms due to this lack of essential balance of micronutrients can lead to an imbalance in the micro flora and lead to increases in odor production, undigested FOG (fats, grease and oil), and higher solids in the wastewater stream leading to higher sludge volume.
NRP products are products that when added to the wastewater will supply many of the missing micronutrients and intracellular enzymes that are required for the microorganisms to function at their highest metabolic rate.
Achieving the highest metabolic rate possible within the collection system and plant assures that the plant efficiency is operating at its maximum throughput and with the highest degree of nutrient conversion (digestion). This increase in nutrient consumption by its very nature reduces the solids loading, decreases the FOG and reduces the odor. The metabolic process of aerobic microorganisms cause three major events, 1. consumption of nutrients 2. production of carbon dioxide gas and 3. generation of energy (heat) . There is also, as the end result of this process, an increase in the number of microorganisms (biomass increase) as the microorganisms go through log phase growth and reproduction. The theoretical conversion of nutrients to new biomass in a typical bacterial life cycle is 1/3 goes to COproduction,1/3 goes to energy production and the remaining 1/3 is new biomass. From this it is evident that if the microorganisms can be activated to achieve their full metabolic rate then there will be a greater consumption of nutrients with a corresponding reduction in solids volume. Additionally, as the beneficial microorganisms out compete the less desirable microorganisms for the available nutrients the ability of these other microorganisms to thrive is diminished thus reducing there ability to create the problems of odor and H2S gas and corrosive acids.
NRP products are formulated (patent pending) from natural extracts of marine algae, selected amino acids and natural vitamins along with plant surfactants which play an important role in the cellular absorption of the product. Studies have been conducted over many months in several municipal and private WWT systems in all climate regions of the US. The results are very impressive. FOG, H2S and total sludge tonnage have all decreased in the systems. The data clearly shows these results (see attached charts).
NRP is one of the few companies that have looked at the entire wastewater treatment system and studied it as a whole entity. This holistic approach to the WWT issue has been instrumental in the development of NRP’s products and how it is used in the WWT system to solve some very basic problems inherent in the optimal performance of the organic digestion processes within the system. By treating the entire system and thereby converting the lateral lines and wet wells into an active part of the biomass conversion process the use of NRP products has in fact made these ancillary systems become part of the overall WWT plant. The volume of waste within the collection system at any given time may represent over 50% of the total capacity of the WWT plant alone. This virtual increase in capacity can increase the overall reduction in biomass organic matter by as much as 30% while at the same time acting as a “pretreatment” buffer for the plant itself.
NRP's contribution to the WWT field has been to re-introduce the concept of total system wide (plant, collection lines, wet wells, etc.) biological treatment. The development of product, (NRP products) that acts on the intra-cellular metabolism of the organisms responsible for the biological decomposition of the organic matter in the wastewater is a major step forward in today’s need for a more efficient and cost effective means of wastewater treatment .
NRP’s Cellular Activator is an all natural non-toxic product that acts at the biological level of the WWT system.
